"Residence in Bulgaria", St. Clair and Brophy

APPENDIX F.

The present value (May, 1868) of two sheniks of corn at Varna is 38 piastres. As a proof that our calculation of the Papas's income is by no means exaggerated, we may mention that the pastor of Derekuoi (who has also another parish, and is not resident here) took away with him sixty skins of lambs, and at least ten okes of meat: the average value of the skins (to sell) is 8 piastres each, and of the meat 5 piastres per oke, making a total of 530 piastres, or nearly 9 piastres from each house, for the "voluntary contributions" collected in one day.
