SPEECH OF THE MEMBER OF THE MANAGEMENT COUNCIL OF THE MACEDONIAN SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTE PROFESSOR STEPHAN BADZHOV BEFORE THE MINISTER PLENIPOTENTIARY OF GERMANY BARON VON RICH THOFEN IN CONNECTION WITH THE LIBERATION OF MACEDONIA

Sofia, April 13, 1941

Your Excellency,

The Bulgarian emigrants from Macedonia gathered here to share our feelings, and 10 ask you to give to the Great Fuhrer of the German nation our admiration for the lightning victories, with which the oppressors of Macedonia were smashed, and also to express our gratitude for the liberty of our fellow-men, the Macedonian Bulgarians.

We, the Bulgarians from Macedonia, arc connected with the ones, living on the other side of the border of our Bulgarian fatherland. We have not only one and the same origin, but also one and the same historical destiny. Our strengths and our sufferings were common during the centuries. Common was our struggle for national revival during the last hundred years. The first book, printed in new Bulgarian language appeared in Salonica, and the first town, that required Bulgarian bishop was Skopje. The Bulgarians in Macedonia always were side by side with the rest of the Bulgarian nation in all struggles for liberation of the Bulgarian people. Nothing divided us until the English policy did destroy United Bulgaria (established according to the San Stephano Peace Treaty), set apart Macedonia from the Bulgarian Principality, and put it again under oppression. Afterward the Bulgarians from Macedonia rose four times for liberation, for which they were inspired by the bequeath of the Bulgarian fatherland. In 1912 the triumphant Bulgarian armies, in which participated 15 battalions of Bulgarians from Macedonia, side by side with Macedonians as officers and soldiers in the regular Bulgarian army, gained our liberation. But the Serbian government, and the intrigues of Greece brought even worst servitude. But even this severe trial could not reduce the aspiration of the Macedonians to freedom and national unification. In 1915 we met with enthusiasm and willingness the union with Germany in which their (of the Macedonians - translator's note) leaders participated a great deal.

These, who served in the Bulgarian army, shed their blood in the battlefields together with the German soldiers in the common struggle for justice.

But in the end instead of justice, fraud triumphed, and afterwards came the oppression. One even heavier hand rested upon Macedonia. Serbs and Greeks not only did take away every human right, but started with unknown cruelty to wrench from the root every feeling from the souls of the Macedonian Bulgarians, even the memory for their nationality.

During this somber lime we found support in three powerful feelings: the consciousness for the spiritual strength of the Macedonian Bulgarians, the faith in the inviolable unity of the Bulgarian nation, and the hope that our noble ally, the German people will put out a salvage hand in the day when again it will show its power

As early as when the Great Fuhrer of the German nation, Adolph Hitler took their destiny in his hands (of the German people - translator's note) we guessed, that the Big Day was near. And this Day arrived. The German power, that had risen with uncontrollable strength to destroy the dictatorship of injustice and oppression came to break the chains of Macedonia. Before us already was the piclurc of one Bulgaria, united under the scepter of our beloved Boris III, in inviolable union with our noble ally, the great German stale.

Your Excellency,

We feel weak to express our deep and strong feelings, that we bear in our hearts and those of the Bulgarian people.

We ask you to transmit to the Great Fuhrer of the German nation, Adolph Hitler, the following words:

In the days of our suffering and weakness we were always true in our memories and hopes to our ally, the German people. In the future we will also prove this faithfulness with the impulse of our wish and with the power of our hands.

Long live the German people, long live its Great Fuhrer, long live the victorious German army!
