The Life of Yané Sandansky

Archive Material
While writing this book, I was able to draw on original documentary material from a number of important Bulgarian archives, including those of Tsar Ferdinand, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry, the Bulgarian Exarchate, and the Supreme Macedonian Committee. There is no united collection of Yané Sandansky’s papers, and documents written by him and relating to him and his group are to be found scattered, in an often haphazard manner, in various archives. Undoubtedly, many documents still remain undetected in unlikely places and in private hands.
An exceptionally valuable depository of material about Yané Sandansky is the archive of his first cousin, Ivan Harizanov, who, intending to write a biography of him, amassed a large collection of original documents and written memoirs, and recorded the oral memoirs of numerous contemporaries in a series of note books. The biography was unfinished at the time of Harizanov’s death, and his collection of source material was presented to the Central State Historical Archives in Sofia, together with his private papers. One of the most interesting items in Harizanov’s archive is an unpublished manuscript biography of Sandansky written by one of his closest comrades, Dimitŭr Arnaudov, who participated in many of the events described.
The memoirs of Georgi Kotsev (kept in the Blagoevgrad Regional Historical Museum) are another important source of first-hand information. Kotsev mentions that Sandansky himself wrote a lot of memoirs, which, unfortunately, fell into enemy hands during the Second Balkan War, and were presumably destroyed. Two other major sources of largely unpublished information are Pavel Deliradev’s account of the weeks which he spent with Sandansky during 1908, and Yurdan Anastasov’s Memoir of Sandansky, which contains information collected by the author from Yané’s contemporaries. (Both these works are kept in the Central Archives of the Bulgarian Communist Party).
In addition to using memoir material from various archives, newspapers and other publications, I was able to interview and record the memoirs of a number of people who had known Sandansky personally, or who were closely related to such people. A number of people also made their private family archives available to me.
